Boulder Gardens are selected and arranged groups of boulders, designed for an educational purpose. At Michigan Tech we selected 40 diverse and representative glacial lag boulders which represent the lithology of all of the regional surficial outcrops, and then put them all in a plaza in the middle of campus. As a result we can display the equivalent of 40 excellent outcrops, all within a few meters of each other. The site has very valuable educational applications which are all explained on the website. Overall the visitor can get a complete introduction to the geology of the 1.1 Ga Mid Continent Rift in an hour and a third.
