Abstract

The Physical Volcanology Collection is a collection of nine modules written to be completed as part of a laboratory component of physical volcanology courses. The modules explore topics such as the physical properties and behavior of magma; fluid flow in conduits, buoyant plumes, lava flows; and the role of bubbles in ascending magmas, to name a few.

The main intent of these modules is to teach the volcanological content itself, bringing in mathematical and quantitative skills as appropriate. As physical volcanology is a quantitative study, the mathematical problem solving involved can prove quite challenging for many students.
