Abstract

Sequential fragmentation/transport model was applied to ash deposits of 1723 eruption of  Irazu volcano, Costa Rica.  Some 25% of the sub-populations showed positive dispersion values, which were associated to a new fractal dimension,. With the help of Mandelbrot fractal relationship such cases were associated to a secondary fragmentation, similar to that proposed by  Kaminski and Jaupart. Hence, explosive and effusive magma could be differentiated out of the granulometry
