Abstract

A collection of images showing volcanic eruption clouds detected by NASA's A-Train satellite constellation, which includes the Aqua, CALIPSO, CloudSat and Aura satellites. These examples demonstrate the unique ability of the A-Train to provide coincident, multi-spectral, active and passive remote sensing data for volcanic clouds. Most images show some combination of data from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on CALIPSO, the Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) on CloudSat, and the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aboard Aura. The vertical profile information provided by the A-Train is particularly useful for trajectory model validation, eruption source term definition and studies of the physical and chemical evolution of drifting volcanic clouds.
