    1999: Ph.D. at Lancaster University, Lancaster (United Kingdom);

    1985: B.Sc. (full marks cum laude) in Earth Sciences, Università degli Studi della Calabria, Cosenza (Italy).

     

    Current position

    2008-present: Dirigente di Ricerca (Research Director) at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Osservatorio Etneo - Sezione di Catania.

     

    Awards

    2007: Most Cited Author 2003-2007 Award by Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research.

    2001: Diploma and Medal from the Italian Department of Civil Defence for the work carried out during the 1991-1993 Etna eruptive crisis.

    1989: Diploma from the Minister of the Italian Civil Protection Nicola Capria for having actively contributed to the first simulation of a volcanic emergency and evacuation of the island of Vulcano, Italy.

     

    Research interests

    Volcanology and geology of volcanic settings; thermal imagery from ground and satellite applied to monitoring of basaltic eruptions; mitigation of eruptive events; hazard evaluation during volcanic crisis at basaltic volcanoes; dynamics of eruptive processes; mechanisms of emplacement of lava flows and growth of lava tubes; lava fountainings, strombolian activity and other explosive processes at basaltic volcanoes; geology, stratigraphy and geological mapping in volcanic environment; instability of volcanoes; sedimentology of volcaniclastic deposits.
