  • Biography

As a Disaster Scientist at USGS/SAFRR (United States Geological Survey/Science Application for Risk Reduction), Sue Perry helps USGS scientists to improve the understanding and use of their science by connecting them with potential users and with experts in risk communication from the social and behavioral sciences and social impact design.

Sue came to hazard science as a mid-life career change. She was a low budget television producer and a resident of southern California in the late 1980s. This was a time of large and frightening earthquakes – and earthquake scientists who rarely provided information she could understand or use. All this made a big impression on her.

In the time between Hollywood and SAFRR, Sue has been a graduate student, consultant, database manager, research internship program director, and community college professor. She is a published novelist, a mother of grown twins, and a grandmother.

Bachelor of Science (2 degrees): Information & Computer Science and Film Production, University of California, Santa Cruz, 1975; minors in linguistics and Irish history

Masters of Science: Geological Sciences, University of Oregon, Eugene, 1999.
