  • Biography
I am especially interested in interactions between magma/lava/tephra and ice/snow/water. Most of my field work has been in Iceland, British Columbia, Russia and Alaska, with lesser work in Montserrat and Argentina. My work spans mapping and description of coherent and fragmental deposits in the field, to microscopic analysis and geochemical/thermodynamic modeling of magmatic processes. Recently I have been focused on lava-ice/snow interactions and am working on the 2010 Gigjokull lava flow (with MT Gudmundsson, B Oddsson, T Thordarsson and others), as well as the emplacement histories of glaciovolcanic pillow lavas in Iceland and BC with M Pollock and others. I have been conducting large scale experiments at Syracuse University since winter 2011 using large (100 kgs) batches of melted basalt to study interactions between lava and ice (http://lavaproject.syr.edu/). I also spent two weeks in 2013 making observations and collecting temperatures and samples during the Tolbachik eruption (2012-2013) with the Belousovs, and made an observational/sampling trip to Veniaminof in Aug 2013 with C Waythomas, G McGimsey, and K Wallace.
