Sonja is currently the Education & Outreach Officer at Montserrat Volcano Observatory. Sonja’s current work at MVO includes maintaining and updating MVO’s website and social media, organizing educational programmes, coordinating MVO participation in local events, coordinating production of MVO’s radio programme, and developing new educational materials including volcanology-themed games, riddles, and activities.
Sonja studied at the University of Pittsburgh from 2004-2008 where she earned her Bachelors of Science in both physics and geology. She then went on to study at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she completed her Masters of Science in geology. Her research was a sedimentological ignimbrite study which focussed on the lithic breccias of the Sovana Eruptive Unit, Latera Caldera, Vulsini Volcanic District, Italy. During the course of her Masters studies, Sonja gained much experience modelling pyroclastic flows with multiphase numerical models such as GMFIX.
