  • Biography

    Dr. Antonio Costa is a Researcher of Geophysics at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Bologna, Italy.

    He received his PhD in Environmental Physics from the University of Bologna in 2004. During his PhD he spent six months at The Open University, UK, in the framework of an EU Research Training Network program. From mid 2005 to the end of 2006 he was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Earth Sciences Department, University of Bristol, UK, where he was also a research visitor from 2007 to 2010. From 2007 to 2010 he was a Staff Researcher at the Osservatorio Vesuviano-INGV, Napoli, Italy. From 2011 to 2012 he was on sabbatical leave at the University of Reading, UK.

    He has collaborated with scientists from all over the world on numerous funded research projects and is author of several tens of papers published in refereed science journals. For his scientific achievements has been awarded the IAVCEI Wager Medalist in 2013.

    His main research interests are the fluid mechanics of volcanic processes, with particular emphasis on magma dynamics; magma properties; models for geophysical flows; atmospheric gas dispersion; tephra dispersal and atmospheric transport of volcanic ash; and natural hazard and risk assessment.
