The Latin-American Volcanological Association was formally created on November 7, 2010, in Manizales, Colombia. Its creation was announced during the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Nevado del Ruiz volcano’s eruption. During that conference, and with the participation of delegates of México, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Argentina and Chile, the first Executive Committee was elected.  The Executive Committee for the period 2017-2018 is composed of:

The main purpose of ALVO is to strengthen and promote ties between Latin American volcanologists. ALVO also promotes international cooperation among Latin American countries and other countries.
